An Ode to the Jamaican Aunties- A Poem by Amanda Hunt

My first time reading one of my poems in public🫣💛

Last year I went to see Oliver Samuels’ new play when he was in NYC. Oliver Samuels is a Jamaican comedian and actor. One of my favorites! His work and bold on stage presence inspires my work and encourages me to go bigger with my on the stage storytelling.

While waiting for the play to begin I “people watched”. 

As each person walked in I imagined what story they may have. What brought them to America and how special a night like this was for them. I especially watched the older women. The glow they all had was a joy to see✨

As I was watching them I started writing this.

Cheers to all the Jamaican aunties. Cheers to the immigrants who are simply trying their best. Love you.
